Hypothesis: People will react awkwardly when asked for directions in an unknown foreign language. They may simply ignore the person who needs help, or try to help but can't. They could also surprisingly try to speak the language if they know a bit or the whole thing.
One of the group members will film the persons reaction as one or two group members will conduct the experiment. The conductors will come up to the group with a map and point to different places on it while speaking different languages, depending on what group it is. The control group will be asked directions in English, a universal language that they will most likely understand. The experimental group shall be asked in (language). Both groups will not know about the experiment beforehand, and the camera will be well hidden to get a more genuine reaction. The variable is speaking to someone in a foreign language. After a while, when the person in the experimental group loses interest, they will be interviewed (in English) about why they reacted the way the did to get a better understanding of social norms. This experiment will occur once every twenty minutes on a sidewalk to see their reaction on the violated social norm. The video and pictures taken of both groups will to see the groups reaction. The two groups' interviews, photos and videos will be compared to make sure that the variable had an impact.
